When Buses still ran through the park! | Tree lighting 2018 Tonight!
Christmas tree at the Arch at Washington Square, photo prior to 1963 when buses were finally banned from running through the park. The sign indicates that park is “Closed to all passenger and commercial vehicles except buses and emergency equipment.” Cars stopped running through WSP due to the efforts of community activists, including Jane Jacobs, Eleanor Roosevelt, Shirley Hayes, and so many more. It takes a Village and don’t give up are the lessons for those advocating for the park today.
