Saturday, March 15th: Victory for Parks Party & Rally in the Village | Next Week: “Save Our Parks and Open Spaces” Week

LaGuardia Gardens Apple Tree

“Victory for Parks” Party and Rally will be held on Saturday, March 15th at 1 p.m. at LaGuardia Park, LaGuardia Place between West 3rd and Bleecker Streets at the Fiorello LaGuardia statue. Everyone is invited to attend! The organizers are asking all park advocates to come and are designating next week as “Save Our Parks and Open Spaces” Week which would certainly apply to Washington Square Park as well.

Also confirmed to attend are: Reps. Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, as well as Assembly Member Deborah Glick, Public Advocate Letitia James, and NY City Council Member Corey Johnson, among other officials; and a number of (non-political) celebrities as well.

Some background:

On January 7th, Judge Donna Mills made a crucial ruling that will protect parkland in Greenwich Village from being obliterated by the NYU 2031 expansion plan.

It’s a great victory for all those who believe that our open spaces truly belong to all of us, and that they can’t be given away without due process. As a matter of fact, since our victory, it’s been cited a number of times by other communities fighting similar battles – e.g., Willets Point in Queens, the Lower East Side/Chinatown, Flushing Meadow Park in Queens – as a major turning point.

Our party will serve as a jumping off point for “Save Our Parks and Open Spaces” Week (March 16 – 22). We will ask everyone to call or email City Hall during the week to ask the administration to support our open spaces. We will also be circulating a letter/petition for supporters to sign.
