This news just in from Peggy Friedman, Executive Director of the Washington Square Music Festival:
“While we had hoped that we would be able to present the Festival’s 62nd season of free alfresco concerts this June, we must cancel our 62nd season in the Square. We are postponing music-making until the danger passes, but are looking at other ways to virtually stay in touch. To all our supporters, we thank you. Keep the faith, we’ll be back.”
I believe there have been one or two other seasons cancelled along the way over the Washington Square Music Festival’s 62 years. I don’t recall if during redesign construction one year the festival was cancelled. Will update.*
The coronavirus pandemic is restricting our outdoor activities – while NYC parks are still open – and we obviously don’t know what the near future holds.
The Washington Square Music Festival is a much respected and beloved annual event at Washington Square Park. We look forward to it resuming.
* From Peggy Friedman on past years cancelled: “We canceled one summer when the incoming state legislature (Republican) held up some grant $$ that had already been allocated, and cancelled the park season during the renovation, but we moved indoors.”
