Reiki… Yoga… Ask a Doctor… Occupy Town Square Returns to Washington Square Saturday, March 23rd Offering Free Health Care, Education & More

Updated 3/22 — A year after their kick-off event at Washington Square in 2012, Occupy Town Square returns to the park on Saturday, March 23rd, this time highlighting health care and debt and the connections with the event Occupy Town Square: Life or Debt.

In light of the tragedy of nearby St. Vincent’s Hospital closing (and the lack of a fight by our city officials), this is particularly relevant to the Village.

Occupy Town Square joins with Strike Debt (both groups are part of Occupy Wall Street) in a day of free healthcare, radical education and, in the afternoon, a march to highlight community hospital closings.

Occupy Town Square advises you to come by if you are “tired, run-down, or listless? Join us SATURDAY all day @ WSP Talk to a Doctor or Nurse with NONE of the paperwork! Reclaiming the Healthcare industry one consultation at a time.”

Other groups involved and what will be offered on Saturday:

Strike Debt, an offshoot of OWS, in collaboration with OTS, Healthcare for the 99%, PNHP (Physician’s for National Health Program) invites the community to join us as we draw attention to a profoundly inhumane and inequitable for profit healthcare system in the US.

There will be legal aid with medical bills, a general “Ask a Doctor” station, education, basic health screenings, rapid HIV testing, Reiki, Reflexology, Yoga and teach-ins.

In addition, Strike Debt’s “Rolling Jubilee initiative” has “bought and abolished a large amount of medical debt ($1 million worth!) and using this ‘buy’ to highlight the profound inhumanity and inequality of our medical payment system and to create a vision of a world where healthcare is truly treated as a right. Some 1000 people will be notified of the cancellation of their medical debt.”
