Films to Celebrate Pride at Washington Square Park Arch: “Stonewall Uprising” June 26 & “Rebels on Pointe” June 27

Two films will be shown to celebrate Pride Month this week under the Arch at Washington Square Park Wednesday, June 26th and Thursday, June 27th.

2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Inn Riots which took place in Greenwich Village not far from the park. The NYC World Pride Parade 2019 takes place Sunday, June 30th. There is also an alternative march planned, The Queer Liberation March, same day, overlapping in time, organized by the Reclaim Pride Coalition, “a group of LGBTQ activists frustrated with how the mainstream march has been overrun by big companies and the police, with whom protesters battled at Stonewall in June 1969.”

The films at Washington Square are presented by the New York City Parks Department.

Film: “Stonewall Rising” * Wednesday, June 26, 2019

8:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m.

Celebrate Pride with NYC Parks and New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment!

This screening will be an official event of the first WorldPride in the United States, in conjunction with 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

When police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City on June 28, 1969, the streets erupted into violent protests that lasted for six days. Stonewall Uprising, a film from PBS AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, tells the story of the Stonewall Riots, a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement. Filmmakers Kate Davis and David Heilbroner will be in attendance.

This movie is sponsored by NYC Parks, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, NYC Pride and WGBH.

Film: “Rebels on Pointe” Thursday, June 27, 2019

8-10:30 p.m.

Celebrate Pride Month with a special screening of Rebels on Pointe (2017), directed by Bobbi Jo Hart.

Exploring universal themes of identity, dreams, and family, Rebels on Pointe is the first-ever documentary film celebrating the world famous Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. The notorious all-male, drag ballet company was founded 45 years ago in New York City on the heels of the Stonewall Riots, and has a passionate cult following around the world. The film juxtaposes intimate behind-the-scenes access, rich archives, and history, engaging character-driven stories, and dance performances shot in North America, Europe, and Japan. Rebels on Pointe is a creative blend of gender-bending artistic expression, diversity, passion, and purpose.

A story which ultimately proves that a ballerina is not only a woman dancing—but an act of revolution in a tutu.

Bring a blanket and come early to secure your spot.
