Some people might recall that I organized a Flash Mob at Washington Square Park for One Billion Rising, an international Day of Action to end violence against women and girls organized by activists around the world and non-profit activist organization V-Day, which took place on February 14, 2013 in 207 countries.

V-Day was founded by New York-based award-winning playwright, performer, author and activist Eve Ensler 15 years ago this year.

This Saturday, October 5th, Ensler will be speaking in Manhattan at ABC Carpet & Home’s “Deepak Homebase,” joined by inspirational Afghan activist and author Malalai Joya, currently on a U.S. tour. Joya had been elected to public office in Afghanistan but was dismissed “for publicly denouncing the presence of what she considered to be warlords and war criminals in the Afghan Parliament.” (Wikipedia)

In 2010, Time Magazine listed Joya as one the 100 most influential people in the world and she recently released her memoir,  A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice, published by Scribner. Via her book’s Amazon page: “She has survived four assassination attempts to date, is accompanied at all times by armed guards, and sleeps only in safe houses.”

The evening will feature Joya in conversation with Ensler about the status of women in Afghanistan & the world, her political career, courageous activism and life.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at ABC Carpet & Home’s Deepak Homebase, a second floor space at the store dedicated by Deepak Chopra for spiritual and activist events.
