New York City’s 7th annual Pillow Fight Day moves this year from Union Square to Washington Square. Not sure if it’s a positive (for WSP) that Occupy Wall Street moved from Washington Square to Union Square and National Pillow Fight Day moved from Union Square to Washington Square. I’m trying to figure out the significance of that.
Gothamist is wondering if the event should be banned. It seems a lit-tle dangerous to me. The organizer commented over there that they have run “12 pillow fights in 2 countries” and monitored “hundreds worldwide” (and, if anyone is concerned about bed bugs, that “most people buy brand new pillows for the event, which we then donate to homeless shelters in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Last year we donated 1500!”). So, basically, that most people don’t have negative intent. I wouldn’t think so – it just seems precarious … and interesting with all the crackdowns the NYPD puts over on people wanting to do the right thing … with street artists being told their mere presence is inhibiting walkways and congesting public space … that this just gets a pass because it appears innocent. I’m sure it’s fun and people get to release their inhibitions and be child-like.
Anyway, it’s this Saturday, April 7th at 3 p.m. at WSP likely between the Arch and Garibaldi Plaza (east of fountain).
From the organizers:
Bunny edition! Pillows fly and bunnies ears soar as you converge for a giant urban pillow fight! Swing and whack as you evade pillow-wielding assailants wearing bunny ears and toting chocolate eggs. Bring a soft pillow and wait for the signal. Pillow fight! This event takes place on the first Saturday of every April in over 100 cities.
Rules: Please follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and fun pillow fight for everybody!
+ Soft, feather-free pillows only!
+ Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once.
+ Do not swing at people without pillows or with cameras.
+ Remove glasses beforehand!
+ Deposit pillows in donation boxes or take them with you.
+ Use #pillowfightday on Twitter.
+ Pajamas welcome.
Cleanup: Please eliminate your use of feathers. As the pillow fight grows in size, so does the mess. By participating, you are pledging to clean up twice the mess you made 🙂
